The Halloween Toad and the Octopus share the same rhythm, 4-hour activities and 4 runs before sleep, but not the same rarity: the toad is Rare and the Octopus is Epic, and the numbers follow. The toad starts ahead, with 350 heart gems and 40 stars at level 1 against 285 and 35, and keeps a small lead on heart gems until level 3. From level 4 the Octopus pulls away on both rewards, and at max level the gap is wide: 800 heart gems and 100 stars per activity for the Octopus, against 520 and 59 for the toad. The Octopus costs more to speed up, 1800 coins against 1600, but its tournament value is still much better: 18 coins per star against about 27, which places it third of the sixteen star animals, the toad 5th. Collected on time and counting the sleep, a maxed Octopus brings in about 240 stars and 1,920 heart gems a day, against 142 and 1,250 for a maxed toad. The real question is availability. The Octopus was the pet of an earlier event and is not in any egg pool today, while the Halloween Toad hatches from the token-based Halloween Egg during the Halloween event, which takes 4,000 Halloween Toad Tokens and ends around November 1. In practice, if you already own an Octopus, keep leveling it; if you do not, the toad is the star pet you can actually get right now.
