This is the Wordscapes dictionary, the full word list of the game: every word it actually accepts, verified level by level against all 6,000 levels on this site, and since the great reshuffle, against both versions of the 2,416 levels that now exist twice. If a word is in here, the game takes it. If you need a level instead, it is one tap away above.
This page is two things at once. It is a working dictionary: type any word in the box and you will know instantly whether the game accepts it, on how many boards it is mandatory, and where it first appears. And it is the deepest analysis of the Wordscapes lexicon ever published: which words the game demands, which words it quietly refuses to show you, and which combinations turn an ordinary board into a flagged one. Everything below comes from the same answer database that powers the level pages on this site, both versions included, checked by hand.

The Wordscapes dictionary, A to Z
Every one of the 11,202 words the game accepts is listed below, letter by letter, the way a dictionary should be. Under each letter you will find two things. First, the expanded entries: every word flagged Hard or Super Hard on three or more boards, plus the famous cases from our study, each with a plain definition and its record in the game. Then the complete inventory of that letter, split between the words the grid can demand and the words the game only ever accepts as bonus. Tap any word in the list and the search card gives you its full record, definitions included for the tricky ones. Expanded entries grow as search data shows us which words players hunt for.

That is the complete inventory. Everything below is what it hides: the patterns, the traps and the ghosts we found by reading all 11,202 words sideways.
The ghost dictionary: 217 common words the game will never show you
Here is the strangest thing in the entire lexicon. Wordscapes accepts thousands of bonus words, and it happily takes your swipe and drops a coin in the jar. But 217 of those accepted words are common English words, the kind you use every day, and the game has never once placed a single one of them in a grid. Not on the 6,000 main levels, in either version of the reshuffled ones. Not in a single daily puzzle in our database. They exist only in the bonus jar, forever.
The champion is DIE. It is one of the most common verbs in the English language, it fits on 297 different boards, and the game pretends not to see it every single time. You can swipe it as early as level 31, where DIE sits in the letters and the grid asks for everything around it instead. DIES gets the same treatment on 163 boards. So do DAMN, ASS and PORN. So do first names like BEN, PETER and MIKE. So do the sounds you make while playing: NAH, HECK and UGH. The reshuffle only made the wall higher: the version 2 boards multiplied their chances, and the grid still looks away.
| Word | How common it is (Zipf) | Boards where it fits, always as bonus |
|---|---|---|
| DIE | 5.07 | 297 |
| DEL | 4.32 | 263 |
| DIES | 4.41 | 163 |
| GEN | 4.33 | 126 |
| REV | 4.12 | 87 |
| NAH | 4.40 | 71 |
| ASS | 5.00 | 65 |
| COS | 4.05 | 57 |
| TREES | 4.69 | 56 |
| BEN | 4.69 | 45 |
| PETER | 4.88 | 41 |
| HECK | 4.02 | 39 |
| GAY | 4.90 | 35 |
| PORN | 4.50 | 35 |
| SEEDS | 4.28 | 35 |
| DAMN | 5.09 | 34 |
Line the list up and three families jump out. Anything touching death or profanity. Anything that reads like a name. Anything you would say out loud rather than write down. The pattern is easy to understand: the grid is the family friendly face of the game, and the bonus jar is where everything else goes to be tolerated. It is a tendency, not a published rule, and we found no official statement about it anywhere. The data speaks for itself.
ERE, the most pointless word in Wordscapes
Among the 3,047 words that only ever count as bonus, one stands alone. ERE, the poetic old word for before, fits on 407 different boards. That makes it more available than almost any word the game actually demands, and it has never earned a single square. The reshuffle even moved its first cameo up to level 27, and it has been collecting bonus coins ever since. If you have ever wondered which swipe is the purest waste of talent in this game, it is E, R, E.
Two faced words: mandatory here, decoration there
2,768 words live a double life. Somewhere in the game they are mandatory, the board will not finish without them. Somewhere else they are just bonus filler. The most extreme case is IRE, the most demanded word in the entire game: it fills a square on 195 levels, starting at level 162, and on 147 other levels the exact same three letters earn you nothing but a coin. DUE runs 163 mandatory against 98 decorative, LED 168 against 95. This is why the game trains you into a habit it then refuses to reward: the word is never wrong, the board just changes its mind about caring.
1,313 levels are gaslighting you
Take every level that carries bonus words, 5,885 of them. On 1,313 of them, that is 22.3 percent, at least one of their boards hides the most common word you can build from the wheel outside the grid. Your instinct finds the obvious word first, the game shrugs, and you start doubting yourself on a board where you were right all along. The most brutal example in the data is level 4323: the wheel spells RKAEQU, the grid demands QUARK and QUAKER, and ARE, one of the most common words in the English language, sits in the bonus jar watching you struggle.
The twin trap: one rack, two answers, same letters
1,344 levels, 22 percent of the whole game, require at least one pair of five letter or longer anagrams on the same grid. Same letters, two different mandatory words. This is the single most repeated trick in the level design, and one trio owns it: RESET, STEER and TERSE. All three are demanded together, on the same board, 48 separate times, and the reshuffle moved their first joint appearance up to level 204. You are not asked to find a word, you are asked to find the same five letters three times and believe in three different orders.
| Twins demanded on the same board | Boards |
|---|---|
| RESET, STEER and TERSE, all three at once | 48 |
| SLEET and STEEL | 29 |
| CREEP and CREPE | 25 |
| DIRGE and RIDGE | 22 |
| MOLAR and MORAL | 22 |
| CRONE and RECON | 20 |
| LEVER and REVEL | 20 |
| CAROL and CORAL | 19 |
The pattern starts earlier than you think. SLEET and STEEL first share a grid at level 223, CREEP and CREPE at level 357. And the game announces its intentions from the opening seconds: level 1, the very first board, already demands both CAT and ACT from the same three letters. The first five letter double is CLOUD and COULD at level 17. The first six letter double changed hands in the reshuffle: LUMBER and RUMBLE now share a version 2 board at level 61, stealing the crown that DENIED and INDEED held at level 106. In total, 220 levels with a wheel of five letters or more demand two or more words that each use every letter on it, and the very first is that same COULD and CLOUD board at level 17.
Why GASES still hurts: the S trap is armed more often than it used to be
Players remember GASES and OASES the way they remember a bad referee call. The data explains why, and the reshuffle sharpened it. Demanding a word and its plural on the same board used to be vanishingly rare; it now happens on 118 levels across 83 different pairs, and the reshuffled boards start as innocently as HIT and HITS at level 16. The game spends thousands of levels teaching you that the extra S is a bonus swipe, then cashes in on your training. GASES itself is mandatory on 13 levels, 5 of them Super Hard, beginning at level 362. And four times, at levels 1285, 1447, 1960 and 5246, the board demands GASES and OASES together. Two of those are flagged Super Hard, one is Hard, and the one at 1447, a version 2 board, carries no flag at all. That last one might be the cruelest level in the game.
When Y does a vowel’s job
Exactly nine words in the required lexicon are four letters or longer with Y as their only vowel:
They sit on 54 levels, and 31 percent of those levels are flagged, against an 18 percent average across the game. The letter Y is not the problem. Y pretending to be a vowel is. The family’s quiet celebrity is LYNX, which appears exactly once in the entire game, in either version, at level 5965, and then never again.
While we are on words that never relax: AURAL, the word for anything related to hearing, held a perfect record for years, flagged on every single board it touched. The reshuffle finally broke it. AURAL now appears on 11 levels, 2 flagged Hard and 5 Super Hard, and the version 2 boards handed it its first unflagged appearances ever. Its streak started at level 506 and ended the day the game reshuffled the deck.
The scarce letters: every Q word in the game
Between levels 1 and 6,000, both versions counted, the game demands exactly 78 words containing a Q, 129 with a Z, 120 with a J and 160 with an X. And the reshuffle moved every debut earlier. The Q era now opens at level 88 with EQUAL and QUAD on a version 2 board, the X shows up first at level 70 inside EXIT and EXCITED, the J at level 80 with ENJOY, and the Z no longer waits until deep in the game: it arrives at level 52 wearing a ZEST. Here is the complete Q list. Tap any word to look it up:
The one timers: 1,458 words you will need exactly once
1,458 words are demanded on a single level in the whole game and never again, and 582 of them sit below Zipf 3 on the frequency scale, genuinely rare words you almost never meet in running text. The reshuffle thinned this club considerably: hundreds of former one timers picked up a second appearance on a version 2 board. IGLOO is the perfect example: it used to appear once at level 1184 and melt, and version 2 built it a second igloo at level 3954. The survivors keep their crowns. TAFFETA still waits alone at level 2475. OCELOT prowls level 5683 alone. BAZOOKA fires exactly once, at level 5947. And the rarest demand in all of Wordscapes remains JERKIER, a comparative so uncommon that word frequency databases record it at effectively zero, required once at level 2411 and nowhere else. If that board beat you, it was not your vocabulary. Nobody’s vocabulary has JERKIER on standby.
The Daily has a private dictionary
The daily puzzle draws from the same lexicon as the main journey, with 49 exceptions: real words that have appeared as daily answers and have never been demanded on any version of the 6,000 main levels. The list reads like the game showing off on weekends: ARMADA, BICYCLE, BIRTHDAY, MENORAH, NUCLEUS, VERBOSE, VILLAIN, WILDLIFE, YELLOW, and, in a twist we refuse to believe is accidental, CROSSWORD. The game is a crossword that only asks you to spell CROSSWORD on a day that disappears at midnight. And once a year the Daily goes further and invents words of its own: on April 1 the required answers are EOJ, REKOJ and their friends, every word spelled backwards, with the real words demoted to bonus for the day.
The 100 percent club has one member left
This section used to celebrate four words that appeared on four or more main levels and carried a Super Hard flag every single time: CALICO, AIOLI, FERRY and FRYER. The reshuffle wrecked the club. CALICO, once the most extreme case in the data, now sits on 9 levels with a mix of flags, 22 appearances once master recycles are counted, and several of its new version 2 boards are not flagged at all. The last member standing is PHARAOH: four levels, 982, 1284, 3806 and 5662, Super Hard on every one of them, in every version. If you want the full anatomy of how these words behave, including the racks that build them and the words the moderators of the Wordscapes community flagged from experience before the data confirmed them, that story lives in our Hard Levels Study, written before the reshuffle and now a snapshot of the game as it was.
How to use this with the game
Stuck on a specific board, letters in hand? The Wordscapes Solver matches your wheel to the exact level and its full answer set, both versions included. Chasing brilliance and bonus goals instead? Every level page on this site lists the bonus words next to the grid answers, so the jar has no secrets either.
Where these numbers come from
Every figure on this page is computed from the answer database behind the level pages on this site, the same database our Solver runs on, and checked by hand before publishing. Since the game reshuffled part of its catalog, 2,416 of the 6,000 levels exist in two versions; a level counts once in the figures even when it has two boards, and both boards are verified. Counts labeled appearances include the master level recycles past 6,000, which reuse earlier boards in two separate catalogs, and the daily puzzles. Word frequency is expressed on the Zipf scale, where everyday words sit around 5 to 6 and words like JERKIER sit at zero. Difficulty flags are the game’s own Hard and Super Hard labels as they appear to every player. This page was fully recomputed in August 2026 against both versions of every level. If your experience contradicts a number here, tell us. The last time players did that, they were right, and this page exists because of it.
Quick answers
Is there an official Wordscapes dictionary? The game has never published its word list. This page is the reconstruction: every word confirmed by the answers across all 6,000 levels on this site, both versions where they exist, required and bonus alike.
Why does the game reject a word I know is real? Because acceptance is per board, not per language. A word only counts where its letters exist on the wheel, and it only fills a square where the designers placed it. If the grid ignores a real word, you just met the bonus jar, or one of the 217 ghosts above.
